In 1961, 5th generation Lindemans brewers René and Nestor crafted our first Oude Kriek using Schaarbeekse krieken (Schaarbeek sour cherries), prized for their intense flavor and deep ruby-red color. For over 65 years, we have partnered closely with growers in this historic region of Belgium, selecting only the finest local cherries to shape the character of every bottle of Oude Kriek Cuvée René and, since 1978, our iconic award‑winning Kriek lambic.

Each year, the early summer harvest marks a cherished moment in our brewing calendar. The cherries are picked by hand at peak ripeness, carefully sorted, and packed tightly in barrels before making their way to the brewery. On our annual Oude Kriek blending day, a once‑a‑year occasion that fills the entire brewhouse with an intoxicating perfume of fresh fruit, our master blenders add these whole cherries, pits and all, to a blend of 1- and 3-year-old lambic. The fruit and beer then rest together in large wooden foeders, where maturation occurs, developing the color, complexity, and unmistakable character that defines Lindemans Oude Kriek Cuvée René.

Lambic evolves in its own rhythm, fruit varies with each harvest, and it's the blender's job to understand how these natural elements behave and how they can complement one another.

At Lindemans Brewery, our blenders combine lambic and fruit into one harmonious whole. They choose the right barrels, decide which lambics pair best, determine ideal proportions in combination with the fruit, and know how to achieve the familiar, consistent flavor that defines every Lindemans fruit beer.
